On March 14, 1927, 21 men from the Sudlersville community came together with a common purpose: to protect the lives and property of their neighbors.
From those 21 founding members grew the Sudlersville Volunteer Fire Company and a tradition of volunteer service that has continued from generation to generation for nearly a century.
In 2027, the Sudlersville Volunteer Fire Company proudly celebrates its 100th Anniversary.
When the Sudlersville Volunteer Fire Company was organized in 1927, its primary responsibility was protecting the community from fire. Over the next century, the responsibilities of our volunteers grew along with the community.
Today, our members provide fire suppression, rescue services, emergency medical services, advanced life support, hazardous materials response, fire prevention education, and mutual aid assistance to neighboring communities.
Our equipment, training, technology, and responsibilities have changed greatly since 1927, but the foundation of our organization has remained the same: neighbors volunteering to protect neighbors.
For 100 years, generations of Sudlersville Volunteer Fire Company members have answered the call.
They have left their homes, families, jobs, farms, businesses, schools, holidays, and community events when their neighbors needed help.
Some served for a few years. Others dedicated much of their lives to the company. Many families have seen the tradition of volunteer service passed from one generation to the next.
Together, these men and women created the legacy we celebrate today.
We remember and honor the 21 men who began this journey in 1927. We also honor every member who followed them and helped build, strengthen, and sustain the Sudlersville Volunteer Fire Company.
The fire company of 2027 would be almost unrecognizable to our founders.
Our modern apparatus and equipment allow our volunteers to respond to emergencies across a first-due area of approximately 65 square miles, while also assisting neighboring departments through mutual aid.
Yet one thing our founders would immediately recognize is the spirit behind it.
Sudlersville Volunteer Fire Company remains 100 percent volunteer-owned, volunteer-operated, and volunteer-staffed.
The commitment made by 21 community members on March 14, 1927 continues every time one of our volunteers answers the call.
Our Centennial is more than an anniversary.
It is an opportunity to remember where we started, recognize the people who brought us here, celebrate the relationship between our fire company and our community, and prepare the Sudlersville Volunteer Fire Company for its next century of service.
Throughout 2027, we invite our members, former members, families, friends, neighboring fire companies, and the entire community to join us as we celebrate 100 years of the Sudlersville Volunteer Fire Company.
We will share photographs, stories, apparatus, memorabilia, historical milestones, and memories from throughout our history, along with information about special Centennial events and activities.
For generations, the community has supported its volunteer fire company.
For generations, our volunteers have answered when the community called.
As we celebrate our first 100 years, we proudly honor everyone who helped make the Sudlersville Volunteer Fire Company what it is today and look forward to carrying this tradition of service into our second century.
